Common Foot & Ankle Injuries – Prevention & Recovery

Your feet and ankles are essential for movement and stability in your everyday activities. An injury to either area can significantly impact nearly everything you do, from walking to exercising. You’ll especially be impacted if any type of athletic activity, like running or playing a sport, is a part of your every day life – or your career!

Common injuries like ankle sprains or small fractures in the feet are prevalent and, if left untreated, can lead to serious complications. However, early intervention can help you recover fully and as smoothly as possible.

No matter your age or activity level, our team at Doncaster Foot Clinic are here to provide the foot and ankle care you need. Continue reading to discover some of the most common foot and ankle injuries, along with how our expert team can assist in your recovery.

Ankle sprains

An ankle sprain can happen when you least expect it, and approximately one million ankle sprains are medically recorded in the UK every year! It’s very much a swings and roundabouts injury. You’re more susceptible to it if you play a high impact sport, like football or basketball, but you’re also in the danger zone if you don’t exercise enough and the area is weak. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Uneven ground & unsupportive shoes are your enemy – as these factors can cause you to overstretch a ligament just walking down the street!

Achilles tendonitis

Inflammation of the Achilles Tendon is another common ankle injury. It occurs when the tendon that connects the back of your leg to your heel becomes swollen and painful near the bottom of the foot, usually due to repetitive stress to the tendon. This often happens when we push our bodies to do too much, too quickly. In clinic, a classic scenario we see is someone, usually marathon training, has suddenly increased the distance they run every day by a few miles without giving their body a chance to adjust to the new distance. This results in pretty painful irritation and inflammation.

Shin splints

If you’re experiencing a throbbing, burning ache in your shins after minor to moderate activity, you could be dealing with shin splints. Shin splints happen when stress on the ligaments grows inflamed. Anyone can develop shin splints, and triggers can even include a walk at a normal pace. You’re much more susceptible to this condition though if you have flat feet or you wear poorly chosen footwear.

How can Doncaster Foot Clinic help?

You’re not stuck with these problems though.

They all have their own solutions – and in clinic we can help you with:

• Custom Orthotics

• Shockwave Therapy

• Laser Pain Relief Therapy

• Footwear advice

• Information on how to avoid triggers

Don’t wait for it to get worse!

Regardless of the condition, the one constant is that these issues rarely go away on their own. The longer you ignore a foot or ankle injury, the more likely you’ll be to experience increased pain and complications, from further injury to permanent damage.

Please schedule an appointment with Doncaster Foot Clinic if and when these problems first occur. We can draw up a treatment plan based on the specifics of your injury & you as a person – especially if you have an activity you want to get back to doing as soon as possible!

Our technology in clinic is proven to speed up the healing of foot and ankle injuries & we want to help more people get back on their feet!
