Chilblains

Chilblains (pernio) are sore, inflamed patches on the skin – usually on the peripheries such as the toes, fingers, or heels – triggered by exposure to cold, damp conditions followed by sudden warming. Poor circulation or tight footwear can make them more likely, causing small blood vessels to react oddly.

Common symptoms of chilblains include:

At Doncaster Foot Clinic, we provide expert chilblains treatment, starting with accurate diagnosis via a detailed examination of your symptoms, medical history, and cold-exposure patterns, while ruling out similar conditions like Raynaud’s, dermatitis, or infection. For effective relief, we prescribe soothing topical creams and ointments to reduce inflammation and itching, use protective dressings for blisters, and offer state-of-the-art laser therapy to ease discomfort, improve circulation, and promote healing. If poor circulation is a factor, we carry out a Doppler vascular assessment. To stop them returning, we give practical prevention advice that works.

If chilblains are leaving your toes sore and swollen this winter, book an assessment with our local podiatry team today – we’ll sort them for good!
