Tradespeople, such as construction workers, mechanics, and electricians, are some of the hardest-working people in our society. They spend long hours on their feet, moving around and working in harsh environments. Unfortunately, all of this hard work can take a toll on their feet, leading to a range of foot problems. However, with some simple foot care advice, tradespeople can protect their feet and stay healthy on the job.

Choose The Right Footwear

The first and most important step in foot care for tradespeople is to choose the right footwear. Your work boots should fit well, provide good arch support, and have a sturdy sole. Steel-toed boots are also recommended to protect the toes from heavy objects and falling debris.

It’s important to make sure that your boots fit properly. You should have enough room to wiggle your toes, but the boots should not be too loose. Tight-fitting boots can cause  corns, calluses, thickening of the toenails, and neuromas, while loose-fitting boots can cause your feet to slide around, which can lead to blisters, seed corns and hammer toes.

Keep Your Feet Dry

Tradespeople often work in environments where their feet can become wet. Wet feet can increase the risk of developing fungal infections, blisters, ingrowing toenails and other foot problems. To keep your feet dry, it’s important to wear moisture-wicking socks that can absorb sweat and keep your feet dry. You can also apply medicated foot powder to your feet before putting on your socks and boots to absorb any excess moisture.

If your feet do become wet, it’s important to dry them as soon as possible. Remove your boots and socks and use a clean towel to dry your feet thoroughly, paying particular attention to the areas between your toes as this is an area commonly affected by athlete’s foot.

Take Breaks

Tradespeople often work long hours on their feet, which can be very tiring. Taking regular breaks can help to reduce the strain on your feet and prevent foot problems. Take a few minutes to sit down and rest your feet whenever possible. If you can, take your boots off and elevate your feet to reduce swelling.

Stretch Your Feet

Foot stretches can help to keep your feet flexible and prevent foot problems. Before you start work, take a few minutes to stretch your feet and ankles. You can use a tennis ball or a foam roller to massage the bottom of your feet and increase blood flow to the area, preventing repetitive strain conditions such as plantar fasciitis.

If you have a break during the day, take a few minutes to stretch your feet and ankles again. Flex and point your toes, and rotate your ankles to keep your feet flexible.

Inspect Your Feet

It’s important to inspect your feet regularly to look for signs of foot problems. Check for blisters, corns, calluses, or any other signs of irritation. If you notice any problems, take action right away to prevent them from getting worse.

If you have any foot pain or discomfort that lasts for more than a few days, it’s important to seek medical attention. Foot problems can become more serious if left untreated, and early treatment can prevent more serious problems from developing.
