Keeping Your Feet Healthy this Winter!

Winter can be a harsh season for our feet. With cold temperatures, icy conditions, & maybe even some snow, your feet are going to be subjected to a variety of challenges that can lead to discomfort & even injury. As a podiatrists, we see firsthand the impact of winter weather on foot health, but this is the time of year to feel comfortable, cosy & safe. We at Doncaster Foot Clinic want to encourage & facilitate that as much as possible. Here are some tips to keep your feet healthy & happy this winter:

Keep Your Feet Warm and Dry

Wear Warm Socks: Opt for wool or moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet warm and dry. Avoid cotton socks, as they can absorb moisture and make your feet cold and clammy.

Wear Waterproof Boots: Invest in a good pair of waterproof boots to protect your feet from snow, slush, and rain. Not only is there nothing worse than walking through the elements in trainers – but they’ll also probably get ruined!

Change Wet Socks Immediately: If your feet get wet, change your socks as soon as possible to prevent blisters, fungal infections or even hypothermia.

Moisturise Your Feet Regularly

Use a Good Moisturiser: Apply a moisturising cream that is rich in urea to your feet, especially at night, to prevent dry, cracked skin. We highly recommend Dermatonics Heel Balm with Manuka Honey – and sell this in clinic!

Avoid Hot Water: While it may be tempting to soak your feet in hot water, it can dry out your skin. Opt for lukewarm water instead.

Take Care of Your Nails

Trim Your Nails Properly: Trim your toenails straight across to prevent ingrown toenails. Avoid cutting them too short. We offer a professional nail cutting service at Doncaster Foot Clinic if you need support with this task, or if your nails have gotten a bit too hard to manage!

Keep Your Nails Clean and Dry: Clean your nails regularly and keep them dry to prevent fungal infections.

Common Winter Foot Problems and How to Prevent Them

Dry Skin: As the air gets colder and drier, the skin on your feet can become dry and cracked. To prevent this, moisturise your feet with a good quality foot cream regularly.

Fungal Infections: Fungal infections, such as athlete’s foot, thrive in warm, moist environments. To prevent fungal infections, keep your feet clean and dry, and avoid sharing towels or shoes with others.

Frostbite: Frostbite is a serious condition that can occur when your skin is exposed to extreme cold. To prevent frostbite, dress warmly and protect your feet from the elements.
